Artist Research

John Duenas

Prior to this research I also looked at wix pages from previous A2 students, this helped me to get a basic idea of what I wanted to do, I then went onto Pinterest to narrow down to one specific idea which I could carry on through-out this project. This then led me to the idea to experiment with double exposure and portraits.

When I researched key words like; double exposure, portrait and photography into Pinterest I found a lot of images which I liked and that gave me ideas for my own photo-shoots. I found a photographer called Jon Duenas and I really liked his style of photography. He takes a variety of images in different styles, however the photos that I like the most are his double exposed/overlay images. His work is quite cold in terms of the colours within his photos, as they are mainly black, white and then the colours of the people within the photo. He also doesn't just take headshots of people that make each photo-shoot look different. This photographers work links well to my chosen theme as they have displayed the overlay/double exposure technique in some of their shoots. His work has shown me different ways I can compose a portrait image to make each photo look different, rather than at the same angle all of the time.

Christoffer Relander

The other Photographer whose work I was interested in, also takes double exposure portrait images. However they are in quite a different styles to the previous photographer I looked at as his images are monochrome, with increased contrast. I also liked how this photographer hasn't just used portrait images within his work and has also used various other shapes and forms. I also quite enjoy the way they haven't only used two photos to overlay and sometimes have used 3 maybe more. This particular photographer has helped add to my project as they have used multiple exposure rather than using just two images, this has helped me because I can now experiment with different styles of photographs and overlaying them to see what effect I can achieve. They have also used a completely white background when photographing their subject which have gave a neat outline of the main image, I quite like this look as it makes the singular forms within the photographs stand out more, to make the photo look more interesting. I also like the effect that the black &white make, because although there is a lack of colour you still can see the whole effect of the different layers of photographs. I think I will take inspiration from this photographer as they have shown me different ways to make my work look interesting rather than having shoots that replicate each other. I found this artist work interesting because of their use of composition and framing.
